Homeowner Needs

The homeowners of this 1965 rambler desired a stylish living space that would be a tranquil antidote to the rest of their home’s active open plan living. An extra room just off the entry was the perfect candidate and the vision was cast to transform a neglected and plain space into a beautiful retreat – a sophisticated library where both the solace of an excellent read or a gathering of friends for a book club and a cocktail can be enjoyed.

Remodeling Solution

Before the remodel, the library was seldom used, furnished with mismatched pieces that lacked comfort and functionality. The transformation introduced custom cabinetry, a carefully selected color scheme, and purposeful furniture arrangement. These updates foster conversation, provide ample space to display cherished book collections, and create a cozy, inviting atmosphere for relaxation, reading, and reflection.

The new flooring in the library complements and balances the dark wood cabinetry while being carried throughout the main floor, including the entry, hallway, dining room, kitchen, and family room. This approach maintains the library as a unique retreat while ensuring continuity with the rest of the home—an important design consideration.

A standout feature of the library is its intentional design, free of an entertainment screen, making it the perfect space for meaningful conversation or immersing oneself in a captivating novel by the warmth of the sleek wood stove insert.

Result

The result is a striking aesthetic composition of custom-crafted rich walnut bookcases paired with gorgeous wall tiles featuring a metal patina surrounding a flush wood-burning insert.

Not only did this remodel transform the living space in the home, but VanderBeken Remodel also received the 2020 REX/T-REX Award in the category: Get Away Room & Specialty Space Excellence for projects under $50,000.

Most importantly, the homeowners now thoroughly enjoy this special getaway room and its inviting atmosphere.

What We Love

We love the rich, moody library feel with modern touches—perfect for a game of chess or curling up with a good book.

Our Favorite Detail

The bronze tile nestles seamlessly between the walnut bookcases—adding both texture and the bonus of extra storage.
