Homeowner Needs
With a family business as storied as their home, our clients envisioned a welcoming space that honored the property’s rich heritage. Their goal was to restore their 1,500-square-foot, three-bedroom, two-bathroom Craftsman home in Everett, WA, to its original grandeur. They sought to transform the dark, dated kitchen into a vibrant and airy space that reflected their unique personality while incorporating period-appropriate details to maintain the home’s timeless charm.
Remodeling Solution
To bring our clients’ vision to life, we infused the remodeling project with unique, creative touches that seamlessly blended their family’s history with the character of their 1,500-square-foot home. A standout detail was the custom mirror crafted by our project manager for the powder room, made from wood salvaged from the clients’ century-old family business—a true nod to their personal heritage.
We began the transformation by addressing the home’s dark interiors, introducing natural light through new windows strategically placed in the powder room, hall, entryway, sunroom, and kitchen. To enhance functionality and flow, we added a new closet, hallway, and built-in bar. In a bold design move, we separated the kitchen from the dining room with a slatted glass door, maintaining an open feel while defining the spaces.
The existing peninsula between the kitchen and sunroom was replaced with a stunning colonnade featuring millwork reminiscent of a 1920s bungalow. The sunroom, with its vaulted ceiling and an entire wall of windows, became a centerpiece of the remodel. Designed with wood sash grills and casings true to the era, this conservatory pays homage to the Victorian Era and the American Arts and Crafts Movement, making it feel as though it has always been part of the home.
In the kitchen, dramatic black marble countertops and sleek stainless steel appliances, paired with vintage-inspired details such as hammered hardware, campaign drawer pulls, casement windows, and a chimney-style vent hood, added a contemporary edge while preserving a subtle architectural elegance. Shaker-style cabinets and glossy subway tiles—both staples of early American design—were incorporated throughout the kitchen and bar, enhancing the home’s timeless charm.
The powder room features elegant French Art Deco-inspired wall sconces and a sink basin that echoes the plaster ceiling medallions of the same era, tying together period-appropriate details with modern functionality.
Result
This remodel breathed new life into the historic Craftsman-style home, thoughtfully preserving its rich heritage while reflecting the family’s unique story. A century after its construction, the home now effortlessly blends iconic early 20th-century design with modern amenities, creating a timeless yet contemporary interior. The updated layout and thoughtful details not only enhance the home’s charm but also elevate the clients’ daily lifestyle, providing a perfect balance of functionality, comfort, and beauty.
What We Love
Another standout antique-inspired design element is the custom-made green glass backsplash, crafted by a local artisan. Backlit to glow, this striking feature evokes early 20th-century Jadeite kitchenware or Uranium glass.
