Homeowner Needs
These Everett homeowners were living with a bland 1958 primary bathroom and a compromised shower floor that had led to soggy subfloors. Knowing the damage needed to be addressed—and planning to stay in their home for years to come—they took the opportunity to remodel the space with both present comfort and future accessibility in mind by incorporating universal design features.
Remodeling Solution
VanderBeken listened closely to the homeowners’ ideas and concerns to reimagine their ensuite bathroom in a way that addressed both functional needs and special requests. A key objective was to enlarge the shower area while staying within the existing bathroom footprint. To achieve this, the team removed the shower entry drywall and framing, expanding the usable space. By installing a continuous matte porcelain tile across both the bathroom and shower floors and enclosing the shower with a sturdy glass surround, they created visual continuity and a greater sense of spaciousness.
The remodel also incorporated thoughtful universal design features to support long-term use. A zero-threshold shower—sized to accommodate a future bench—was paired with a handheld shower on a height-adjustable bar, strategically placed grab bars in the shower and near the toilet, and a dual-purpose 9” grab bar with an integrated toilet paper holder. A 2’-10” full-lite pocket door with privacy glass replaced the traditional swing door, allowing more natural light in and enhancing accessibility.
The homeowners requested ample, stylish storage at the vanity, and VanderBeken delivered with a custom piece featuring a smart combination of standard and deep drawers, an inset medicine cabinet, and floating walnut shelves above the toilet. The vanity is topped with Silestone Helix quartz and complemented by a Brizo single-handle faucet and motion-sensor toe kick lighting. A vibrant cobalt hex tile accent wall and coordinating shampoo niche in the shower add a bold yet refined design flourish to this beautifully transformed space.
Result
After going over a year without a functional shower in their ensuite bathroom, the homeowners are thrilled to see their vision come to life. The remodeled space not only reflects their style but also supports aging in place with comfort, confidence, and a touch of elegance.
What We Love
We love that, through thoughtful design and careful planning, we were able to maintain the original bathroom footprint as well as the existing electrical and plumbing locations.
Our Favorite Detail
The bold indigo custom vanity and accent tile, combined with motion-sensor LED lighting at the toe kick, make a striking impression. Even the grab bars serve as stylish accessories rather than clinical fixtures.
